"Causes, Symptoms, and Ayurvedic Home Remedies for Vitiligo (White Patches)"

Vitiligo is a chronic skin disorder in which white patches appear on various parts of the body. These patches slowly spread if not treated at the early stage. If left untreated, the entire skin can turn white. It is a major disease, and once it becomes chronic, it is very difficult to control. The treatment is not quick but rather long-term and requires patience and discipline.


Causes of Vitiligo

  1. Lack of Melanin Pigment – When the melanin pigment decreases in the body, the skin starts turning white.

  2. Digestive Issues – Chronic constipation, dysentery, indigestion, weak intestines, and poor heart function can lead to vitiligo.

  3. Mental Stress – Excessive mental pressure or stress can also trigger the condition.

  4. Non-vegetarian Diet – Consumption of meat may increase the chances of developing vitiligo.


Treatment

Vitiligo is a complicated and stubborn disease, but it is treatable with discipline. By maintaining strict dietary control and applying proper Ayurvedic remedies, the white patches can gradually disappear.


Dietary Restrictions

To make medicines more effective, it is essential to avoid all forms of salt (even in cooked food). Here's a guideline:

  1. Avoid all types of salt – including salt in sauces, pickles, or processed food.

  2. Eat salt-free vegetables – such as green banana, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, beans, soybean, spinach, fenugreek, amaranth, tomato, carrot, pointed gourd, radish, turnip, beetroot, etc.

  3. Use only chickpea lentils – without salt.

  4. Drink juices – such as carrot-spinach juice, seasonal bitter gourd juice (salt-free), and daily bathua juice.

  5. Eat salt-free chickpea flour bread (roti) – with pure ghee and unrefined sugar (boora).

  6. Roasted or boiled chickpeas – should be eaten without salt.


Ayurvedic Internal Medicines

  • Dried Pomegranate Leaves Powder – Take 10 grams each in the morning and before bed with fresh water or cow’s milk.

  • Babchi (Psoralea) Seeds – Soak overnight and consume the water in the morning and evening. Also, apply the paste of crushed seeds on the patches.

  • Manikya Bhasma – Take half a ratti with honey in the morning and evening.

  • Pigment Tablets – Take two tablets each in the morning, noon, and evening (as per Ayurvedic prescription).


External Ayurvedic Applications

  1. Babchi Seed Paste – Soak and grind 2 tola (approx. 24g) of Babchi seeds, and apply twice daily.

  2. Bathua Juice & Sesame Oil – Boil 1 glass of bathua juice with ½ glass of sesame oil until water evaporates. Store the oil and apply on patches twice daily.

  3. Babchi Oil – Available in markets, apply on affected areas twice a day.

  4. Urad Dal Paste – Grind with water or garlic juice and apply.

  5. Turmeric + Spirit – Mix 150g turmeric with 600g spirit. Keep in sunlight and apply 3 times a day.

  6. Basil Root Paste + Sesame Oil – Clean, grind basil plant with roots, cook in sesame oil, and apply on patches 3 times a day.

  7. Milky Sap of Behaya Plant – Apply twice daily.

  8. Neem and Pomegranate Leaf Paste – Apply in the morning and evening.


Foods to Avoid

Avoid sugar, jaggery, milk, curd, pickles, refined oil, dalda (hydrogenated fat), buttermilk, raita, chyawanprash, and other rich or fermented foods.


Scientific Causes of Vitiligo

  • Deficiency of melanin

  • Autoimmune disorders

  • Weak liver or poor digestion

  • Consumption of meat, fish, milk, and lemon together

  • Deficiency of Vitamin B12 and D

  • Mental stress

  • Genetic factors

  • Exposure to harsh chemicals or skin burns


Effective Ayurvedic & Home Remedies

1. Babchi Seeds (Psoralea)

  • How to use: Soak overnight, peel, grind, and apply on white patches.

  • Babchi oil: Available in stores; apply and expose to sunlight for 15–20 minutes only (excess exposure can burn the skin).

  • Internal use: Take Babchi powder with honey twice daily.

2. Neem and Giloy

  • Neem: Drink neem leaf juice daily.

  • Giloy: Take 10–15 ml of juice in the morning and evening to boost immunity.

3. Turmeric and Mustard Oil

  • Mix turmeric powder with mustard oil and apply twice daily to help restore pigmentation.

4. Walnuts and Figs

  • Improve blood purification and provide skin nourishment.

5. Copper Vessel Water

  • Store water in a copper vessel overnight and drink it on an empty stomach in the morning. It strengthens the liver and prevents skin diseases.

6. Triphala, Haritaki, Amla

  • Detoxifies and purifies blood.

  • Take Triphala powder with warm water every night.
